Frequently asked questions

Do I actually need a sauna hat, or is it just a gimmick?
It's not a gimmick. Hot air rises, so your head sits in the hottest zone of the sauna while your body is relatively cooler. Without a hat, your head can overheat before your body gets the full benefit of the session, leaving you dizzy, headache-prone, or cutting sessions short. A felted wool hat acts as insulation, slowing how fast heat reaches your scalp so your body can stay in the heat longer and actually enjoy it. Once most people try one, they don't go back.
What does a sauna hat actually do?

Three main things:

(1) It protects your head and scalp from direct, intense heat (sauna air can reach 205°F+).

(2) It helps regulate your body temperature by keeping your head — which has more blood vessels near the surface than anywhere else — from overheating.

(3) It shields your hair from repeated heat stress, preventing dryness, brittleness, and color fade. The result: longer, more comfortable sessions with less dizziness.

How often do I need to wash it?

One of wool's biggest advantages is that it doesn't need to be washed frequently. Wool naturally resists odor and bacteria, so after most sessions, airing the hat out completely is enough. Give it a full hand wash every few weeks or whenever it starts to feel like it needs it. After each sauna, rinse briefly in cool water and hang to dry — this removes surface salts from sweat and keeps it fresh.

Will my sauna hat shrink?

Because Felty hats are made from pre-felted wool, the shrinkage process has already happened during manufacturing. The hat is stable in sauna heat and moisture under normal use. The main shrinkage risk comes from machine washing with agitation or using hot water when hand washing — both of which compact the wool fibers further. Stick to cold water, gentle handling, and air drying, and it'll hold its shape for years.

How do I store my sauna hat between uses?

Store it in a cool, dry, ventilated space. Don't stack heavy items on top of it or stuff it into a tight bag while still damp. To help it hold its shape between uses, you can stuff it loosely with a clean cloth or paper while it dries. Keep it out of direct sunlight, which can fade the color over time.

How do I clean my Felty sauna hat?

Hand wash only — never machine wash. Fill a basin with cold water, add a small amount of wool-specific detergent (like Woolite), and gently press the hat through the water. Don't rub, wring, or scrub — just gentle compression. Rinse in cold water until the soap is gone, then press out excess water with a towel and reshape the hat. Let it air dry completely in a well-ventilated spot away from direct sunlight or heat sources. Don't put it in the dryer.

Should I wet my sauna hat before going in?

Yes — this is a great tip. Lightly dampening your hat with cool or lukewarm water before entering the sauna adds an evaporative cooling layer on top of the wool's natural insulation. As the moisture evaporates, it draws heat away from your head. Don't soak it through — just a light dampening. Wring out any excess before putting it on.

Will the Felty hat get too hot to wear?

No — that's the point of wool's natural insulating properties. Wool fibers trap air, which slows how quickly the hat itself heats up. You'll notice your head stays noticeably cooler than it would without a hat, even though you're sitting in the same heat. This is why wool sauna hats have been used in Finnish and Russian banya traditions for generations.

How thick should a wool sauna hat be?

The sauna community generally recommends at least 1.4mm of felted wool for real insulation. Thinner felt (under 1mm) offers minimal protection in high-heat saunas. Felty hats are crafted from 3mm premium felted wool at the right thickness to balance insulation, breathability, and a comfortable fit — not too stiff, not too thin.

Is a wool sauna hat worth it if I have short hair?

Yes. Hair protection is just one of the benefits. The bigger reasons to wear one apply to everyone: preventing head overheating, reducing dizziness, and extending session length.

People with short hair or no hair often find they benefit most from the temperature regulation side of things.

Is a wool sauna hat worth it if I have long or color-treated hair?

Especially yes. High, repeated heat dries out hair shafts, causes split ends, and strips color-treated hair faster.

A felted wool hat creates a thermal barrier that protects your hair the same way sunscreen protects your skin.

Many long-haired sauna regulars call it essential — it lets them sauna frequently without wrecking their hair.

Why felted wool and not just a regular knit wool beanie?

A knit beanie can work in a pinch, but felted wool is significantly better. Here's why: knit fabric has open loops that allow heat to pass through easily, and it tends to stretch and deform in the heat. Felted wool is compressed and dense — the fibers are tightly matted together, creating tiny air pockets that act as insulation. It slows heat transfer, holds its shape in humidity, and doesn't droop over your eyes mid-session. The sauna community's consensus on Reddit is consistent: felt > knit every time.

What makes wool better than cotton or synthetic materials?

Wool is uniquely suited for extreme heat environments. It naturally regulates temperature, wicking moisture away while still insulating. It's naturally antibacterial and odor-resistant — meaning it stays fresher longer and doesn't need washed after every single use. Cotton absorbs moisture and can feel heavy and wet in the sauna. Synthetics can hold heat uncomfortably and some may off-gas at high temperatures. For serious sauna use, wool is the clear choice.

My hat lost a little shape after washing — can I fix it?

Yes. While the hat is still slightly damp, reshape it by hand — gently stretching or molding it back to a rounded form. You can also use light steam (from a clothing steamer or hovering briefly over a pot) to relax the fibers and reshape. Let it dry fully in its reshaped form.

Do you offer custom or branded sauna hats?

Yes — Felty partners with saunas, spas, recovery centers, gyms, and businesses to create custom-designed hats with your brand. It's a great way to elevate the guest experience or offer branded merchandise. Visit our collabs page to learn more.

Is Felty a traditional Finnish sauna hat?

Felty draws on the deep Scandinavian and Finnish sauna tradition, where felt wool hats have been part of sauna culture for generations. We've taken that heritage and designed a hat that fits naturally into modern wellness routines — whether you're in a traditional wood-burning sauna, a barrel sauna, or a home infrared cabin.

What sizes does the Felty hat come in?

The Felty Original is designed as a one-size-fits-most hat suitable for a wide range of adult head sizes. The felted wool has a slight natural give that allows it to conform to your head over time without being tight.
