(2) It helps regulate your body temperature by keeping your head — which has more blood vessels near the surface than anywhere else — from overheating.
(3) It shields your hair from repeated heat stress, preventing dryness, brittleness, and color fade. The result: longer, more comfortable sessions with less dizziness.
One of wool's biggest advantages is that it doesn't need to be washed frequently. Wool naturally resists odor and bacteria, so after most sessions, airing the hat out completely is enough. Give it a full hand wash every few weeks or whenever it starts to feel like it needs it. After each sauna, rinse briefly in cool water and hang to dry — this removes surface salts from sweat and keeps it fresh.
Because Felty hats are made from pre-felted wool, the shrinkage process has already happened during manufacturing. The hat is stable in sauna heat and moisture under normal use. The main shrinkage risk comes from machine washing with agitation or using hot water when hand washing — both of which compact the wool fibers further. Stick to cold water, gentle handling, and air drying, and it'll hold its shape for years.
Store it in a cool, dry, ventilated space. Don't stack heavy items on top of it or stuff it into a tight bag while still damp. To help it hold its shape between uses, you can stuff it loosely with a clean cloth or paper while it dries. Keep it out of direct sunlight, which can fade the color over time.
Hand wash only — never machine wash. Fill a basin with cold water, add a small amount of wool-specific detergent (like Woolite), and gently press the hat through the water. Don't rub, wring, or scrub — just gentle compression. Rinse in cold water until the soap is gone, then press out excess water with a towel and reshape the hat. Let it air dry completely in a well-ventilated spot away from direct sunlight or heat sources. Don't put it in the dryer.
Yes — this is a great tip. Lightly dampening your hat with cool or lukewarm water before entering the sauna adds an evaporative cooling layer on top of the wool's natural insulation. As the moisture evaporates, it draws heat away from your head. Don't soak it through — just a light dampening. Wring out any excess before putting it on.
No — that's the point of wool's natural insulating properties. Wool fibers trap air, which slows how quickly the hat itself heats up. You'll notice your head stays noticeably cooler than it would without a hat, even though you're sitting in the same heat.
